The Tree by Adrian Neil Chellew (Note of affection#3, Love Africa Carnival)

September 7th, 2008 by Alex - 'Camel'

Love Africa Carnival Note of Affection #3 is from Adrian Neil Chellew, who was born in Cape Town. He is studying animation and acting. He says: ‘My dreams involve film, Broadway, writing and directing plays and musicals that move the hearts and minds of people around the world. Here’s a poem about a past moment of love in Africa. The Tree in the poem is in Bergvliet. This particular tree is on a small patch of open land not far from the highway. An old friend of mine and I would play around there when we were kids.’
Bergvliet means ‘Mountain Steamlet’ and Bergvliet is a suburb in Cape Town. Originally Bergvliet was a farm owned by Simon van der Stel, the first governor of the Cape of Good Hope, but in the 1950’s the farm was divided up and turned into a new suburb to provide accommodation for servicemen who had returned from fighting in World War II.
