A Video to Celebrate International Mother Language Day, 21 Feb. 2009 and the Official Close of the International Year of Languages

Orphans LullabyWhen International Year of Languages was declared in 2008 by the U.N. General Assembly, Koïchiro Matsuura, the Director-General of UNESCO said it was “a unique opportunity to make decisive progress towards” fostering “linguistic diversity and multilingualism in educational, administrative and legal systems, cultural expressions and the media, cyberspace and trade … at the national, regional and international levels.”

The Orphan’s Lullaby project is a multilingual celebration of languages spoken in Africa, and a multilingual expression of uniting for children and uniting against AIDS.

Volunteers from around Africa and the world translated the very simple Orphan’s Lullaby for inclusion in a picture book of many languages. Translations have been collected over the past seven months, the last ones received at the end of January 2009, and more are still on the way.

At this stage 29 languages are featured in the project, they are: Wolof, Xhosa, Zulu, English, Sotho, Arabic ,Lingala, French, Afrikaans, Chichewa, Hindi, Igbo, German, Mandarin Chinese, Hausa, Polish, Swazi, Siswati, Italian, Amharic, Venda, Masry, Portuguese, Tsonga, Swahili, Spanish, Greek, Malagasy, and Oromeffa.

In addition to being a linguistic unity project, the intention of the project was that the picture book, when published (still looking for a publisher who will publish not-for-profit), would be sold to raise money for organizations that work to support and nurture children affected by HIV AIDS, in particular the SA AIDS Trust, The Starfish Foundation and Unicef’s Unite for Children Unite Against Aids campaign. However, this is not a static project, it’s a dynamic project and translations are still coming in and are still welcome, as are editorial comments on the existing translation, so perhaps in addition to the picture book, which will happen this year hopefully, a more live (not to mention, internationally accessible) platform is required, such as this!

Below is a video prepared for International Mother Language Day, using some of the images developed for the picture book, together with lines from a selection of the translations, and set to the lullaby sung in English.

Unite Against AIDSHopefully anyone who is interested in the translations, and the spirit of the project will consider showing their support, by making some kind of donation, no matter how small, to unicef’s UNITE FOR CHILDREN UNITE AGAINST AIDS campaign(donation form online) or to the SA Aids Trust or to the Starfish Foundation (takes online donations).

Everyone is still welcome to send in translations of Orphan’s Lullaby in any language, particularly languages from around Africa, but in celebration of Mother Language Day on 21st February, translations in all languages from anywhere in the world are also heartily welcome.

TRANSLATOR BIOGRAPHIES and NOTES ON TRANSLATION

MARIAMA NDOYE
CELEBRATED SENEGALESE AUTHOR MARIAMA NDOYE HAS WRITTEN SEVERAL NOVELS AND CURRENTLY RESIDES IN TUNISA. SHE SAYS: ‘Love pervades my books as it does my life. My characters are love-addicts. The main protagonist in “Comme du bon pain” engages in a fierceful fight to win back the love of her husband who had fallen into polygamy. Physical love is depicted in some parts of the novel and many readers hailed its beauty, its poetry and “audacity”. You seldom find sex openly described in Senegalese literature. The sense of propriety in the Senegalese society does not allow for it. Ever since I could read and write, reading and writing make me feel happy and give me a sense of fulfillment. I derive the themes in my books from our daily lives and my characters embody my own world vision. It is nice to be a Senegalese woman writer in 2008, as literary production is growing fast. However, we don’t thrive on literature. We are not much read outside our frontiers; because of their low income, our fellow countrymen cannot afford to buy books as a matter of priority; our school syllabuses do not take our books into account but we staunchly remain faithful to Writing and to better prospects for the future.

XOLISA GAZULA
Xolisa lives in Cape Town. She is an author of Children’s books such as Umvundlana and Father Sail. She works for PRAESA and is involved various projects to encourage children to enjoy reading. Of her earliest memory of books, reading and writing, Xolisa writes: As a child growing up in the rural village in the Eastern Cape, I was raised by my grandmother, while my mother was teaching in another village. Sometimes when my mother came to visit us over the weekends, she would bring old carbonated cheque books. My younger aunt and myself discovered that we could write anything on them with a stick, but there would be writing underneath. We were fascinated by this and we wrote even more. I remember my mom teaching us rhymes like Little Boy Blue, iketile, katana katana and then she recorded us. We loved listening to ourselves on tape recorder showing off to other children of course. Unfortunately my grandmother never told me any stories. I don’t know why but she loved people who liked to read. She was proud that she educated my mom. She sent us to a Sunday school where we learned hymns, prayers and read from the bible. We had a big bible at home titled Incwadi yabantwana yamabali ebhayibhile (My book of Bible Stories). My younger aunt and I loved reading the bible and looking at the pictures of Noah’s Ark, David and Goliath and so on. My big aunt and uncles were already in the middle school when I started Grade 1. They played school with us and started teaching us to read school stuff, the phonics and dictation. The only books they brought home were their text books and readers. At school we did a lot of rhymes but they were never written down. The only thing I remember was reading a, e, i, o, u, ma, me, mi, mo, mu, umama and then umama umeme umimi. When I got to grade 3 things started to change dramatically for me. My mother left the Eastern Cape to teach in the Limpopo Province. She wrote a lot of letters to my grandmother. Of course my grandmother could not read, so I read letters to my grandmother. I also wrote letters to my mother on her behalf. We always looked forward to receiving letters. Sometimes my mom would send telegrams and send money by post and send us clothes and goodies by post. I always read all the communication and went to the post office with my granny to help her sign.

DENISE MHLANGA
Denise lives in South Africa and is a journalist. Here is how she responded to some questions on her childhood reading experiences, words she likes, and the exprience of translating the lullaby.

1.What is your earliest memory of books and reading? From the age of six I was fascinated by books of all sorts. Story books, picture books and newspapers although I was relying on my bigger sisters to read for me while was still coming to terms with languages. At 7, I could read simple books and my mother not only told me stories she read too. So books have been very much a part of my life since childhood.

2. As a small child, what (picture) book/s were your favourite? I liked the English Classics of bedtime stories, there were a few authors which I can’t remember who wrote in Ndebele and the stories were very graphic. Mostly, they revolved around nature and how human beings related to them. They knew how to entertain children in both words and pictures. The one book that stands out for me is a Ndebele book entitled “Ukuthunjwa kukaSukuzukuduma” – can’t remember the author but it told the story of a brave young boy whose stepmother was the most horrible person but maintained his good character for which people admired him for.

3. As an adult, as parent or caregiver, what has been your experience of reading with children? I find that children absolutely love being read too. Especially because today, they spend so much time watching television and playing videos, when you read a book to them, you excite them, evoke their thinking and enhance their curiosity. Read good books to children, try as much as possible to speak different voices as the story requires, they would always want to have books read to them.

4. In the city (please mention the city) where you grew up, do you recall a special bookshop or library or other place of books that you visited? My books were either bought for me by my mother or my sister. The library was always a good source, and church sales to raise money always had book sales etc. my books were and are still bought all over Jozi. I love second hand bookshops. Lots in Jozi too, Bookdealers in Rivonia my favourite, you always find out of stock or print books at reasonable prices.

5. In the language you have translated into, can you please share a word or two that you particularly like, giving the meaning of the word in English? Ukufunda incwadi ngumthombo wenhlakanipho futhi kukhaliphisa inqgondo. It means reading is the source of knowledge and it broadens one’s mind. (IsiZulu).

6. Is there anything you would like to share about your translation of the lullaby? It brought back memories of my childhood. If anything, I was really privileged as a child to have a mother who could read and share stories with me. she always had the time to listen to my own stories and questions on any book we read together. I think it gave me the confidence that whatever story I have and I am willing to write it and share with others, it would be read anyway. I need to reach out and continue challenging myself on story writing and story telling. As a journalist, I not only write facts and figures, I tell stories.

PULENG LETSIE
Puleng Letsie ,Coordinator of Country Support & Development at the Southern African AIDS Trust (SAT) http://www.satregional.org Puleng Letsie is a Public Health professional with 9 years of experience in the HIV & AIDS field in Southern Africa. She is single and has a 22-month old son – Lits’itso or Lebo and a younger sister. She loves travelling, going out with friends and writing – recently received a UNDP award from the 2007 Network Participation Fund representing the Africa region for her active participation in the HIV & AIDS Network – and has put together several articles and publications on various issues including HIV & AIDS and Behavioural Change Communication.

On her childhood reading experiences she writes: My earliest memory of books and reading was actually not a book but watching my uncle silently reading a newspaper and in the process convincing myself – and going on to confront him about how he was NOT reading as he was silent – I guess my idea of reading was to read aloud for others to hear you. My favourite book (or at least the one I recall enjoying) was ‘Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs’. With regard to reading with children – I do sometimes read with my 2.5 year old son though he’s still too young – but he is able to count to 5 though he is not yet in pre-school. I spent my early school years in Mafeteng (a town in Southern Lesotho) and we visited the district library twice a week. About my translation of the lullaby – today as I read it again (on the website) it was surprisingly a bit emotional for me as I thought I really did justice to my language! This also made me think whether I have some unleashed potential within me to write in my vernacular, and has really got me thinking!

Yvonne is Kao Yi-Fen’s English name. Yi-Fen is a British Chevening scholar and majored in ‘eTourism’. After been to more than 20 countries, she decided to share her experience with others. Now, she is a qualified Tour Leader in Mandarin, English and Japanese, and licenced English Tour Guide. She works for a foundation in Taipei, Taiwan to promote youth travel and ISIC card.
About the translation experience, she writes: I have never known that I am able to be a translator! There are so many people in Taiwan who’s English is much better than me. However, I do want to give my thanks to Alex who provide me this opportunity to do something for Orphans! More importantly, keep my Mother Language for next generation !! I appreciate that there is a separate Traditional Chinese version and Simplified Chinese version. To me, it represents two different cultures!! Due to the rising power of China, Simplified Chinese became the major stream of learning Mandarin. I can’t even find a proper Tradition Chinese-English dictionary in the bookshop in Taiwan anymore. It’s kind of warning that we should be alert. Maybe after few years, Traditional Chinese will disappear~ Traditional Chinese is not only a language but an ART ! The beauty of this character is beyond the words. I hope more people can recognise this issue and help to keep Traditional Chinese for another five thousand years!

ELAINE AND ANDRE LIVE IN CAPE TOWN. ELAINE HAS 30 YEARS EXPERIENCE AS A TRANSLATOR AND teaches French at the Alliance Francaise and Adré does free-lance translation work after teaching English at the University of Cape Town. On her childhood reading experiences and the Lullaby project Adré wrote:

My earliest memories of the joy of reading revolve around my parents’ large double bed on Sunday mornings , when we all snuggled in around the book my mother was reading to us at the time. My mother, with two bright blond boys’ heads clustered on one side and a little girl’s peering over her shoulder on the other, would bring alive the stories we all loved – Squirrel Nutkin, Winnie-the -Pooh, The Wind in the Willows…. We had no children’s stories based on African folk tales at that time, and I’m happy to say that now I have the delight of reading such stories, in addition to the old favourites, to my grandchildren. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe bed down well with When Hippo was Hairy etc!

In translating the lullaby, I was intrigued by the different connotations of the word ‘lullaby” in English and “berceuse” in French. The word ” lullaby “is more onomatopoeic, evoking the liquid sound of the lulling song; “berceuse’ has connotations primarily of the rocking to and fro movement that sends the child off to sleep. This has been a wonderful project.

KARINA MAGDALENA SZCZUREK
Karina is an author and literary critic. Born in Poland, she grew up in Austria and the US. She now lives in Cape Town. Polish wasn’t on the original Orphan’s Lullaby list of the fifty languages, but Karina volunteered and the Polish translation is heartily welcomed as this is, after all, a unity project. Karina said, ‘there are some small, but very strong Polish communities in Africa, also in South Africa.’
Karina wrote this about her translation: “Although I am quite certain that I came very close with the translation to the original, there are some difficulties: First of all I had to use the diminutive of orphan, because the ordinary word can have two meanings, the second is “clumsy fool”.

In Polish all nouns reflect genders in accompanying adjectives and verbs, so when one addresses the child the verb endings are different to when one refers to the child as the moon or the soul… Tough to negotiate.

I managed to rhyme without having to bend the original too much which should be nice for the Little Ones.”

Emilio was born above a trattoria, in the village of Roverbella, in the Northern province of Mantova. He moved to Africa (Kenya) in 1955, when he was just 18. He moved down to South Africa in 1968.

MICHAEL AMBATCHEW
LANGUAGE ACTIVIST AND CHILDREN’S AUTHOR MICHAEL AMBATCHEW HAS WRITTEN MORE THAN A DOZEN BOOKS. HE LIVES IN ETHIOPIA AND ACTIVELY WORKS TO ENCOURAGE AND PROMOTE ETHIOPIAN CHILDREN’S LITERATURE. HE WRITES: As a parent, I am always amazed how my son keeps on reacting anew to the same story read again a zillion times. How he keeps getting frightened, excited or bursts out laughing at the same places night after night, even though he knows it all before and even fills in the words I skip as I begin to doze off before him. I began writing stories for fun, but then published over 30 stories in the Ethiopian Government’s high school English textbooks in the 1990’s. I became aware of the shortage of supplementary readers in 1997 when I was involved with the Education Sector Development Program and have been publishing stories since then. I was one of the founding members of Writers for Ethiopian Children. While conducting my doctorate studies in the early 2000’s I realised the need for text light books at the pre-school level and extended my stories to this level. Currently, I am a freelance education and language consultant and am also an advisor to the Stories Across Africa project.

Mbavhalelo Elvis Nemukula, is Sowetan’s Senior Sub-editor; a former English literature teacher, Sub-editor (The Star); Sub-editor (The Mercury); Sub-editor (Mafube publishing); Sub-editor (City Press); and 2006 Clive Mennel Media Fellow at Duke University (USA).

Maria Elisa Knust Silveira holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Southampton, School of Education, UK. She has recently retired from the Post-Graduation Department of the Instituto de Letras from Universidade Federal Fluminense, in Brazil and is currently teaching at the Foreign Language Project from the same university. Her main interests are in the areas of materials design, teacher education and ESP.

Although Greek was not on the original OL Project list of languages of Africa, there are thriving Greek communities in Africa, and since the project is all-embracing, all offers of translation were welcomed with great delight! Anna found out about the project via Facebook.

NOTES:The reason the lullaby becomes so long is because, there isn’t really one word for lullaby or orphan’s, so it is broken down into several words. However there is one word for Orphan, but it is not really used because it can be a bit offensive. at least that’s what I think.

MOHHAMED EL MONGY AND YASMINE EL RIFAI
Live in Egypt. Notes on translation: Egyptian Arabic is a deviation of the classical Arabic mixed with some French, English, Coptic, Pharaonic (old Egyptian), Italian, Greek, and Nubian influence. We use the same letters as Arabic in writing it; it is mostly a spoken language rather than a written one. Some of the heavy letters in Arabic are not pronounced like the ‘j’ or the ‘qu’ but still some letters do not have equivalent in English.

The things that were difficult to translate are things like “The first star” it sounds very dodgy in Arabic and in Masry Arabic. Expressions like ‘dream light’ or ‘be the moon’ sound very literal and simplistic or do not really make a lot of obvious sense. Also an expression like ‘mother nature’ is simply not said in Arabic. Instead something like ‘great nature’ or ‘amazing nature or ‘embracing nature’ is used instead.

But anyway, we tried to translate it with the most comprehensive way possible, and I believe that although some expressions can be translated in several different ways, the one we sent you is adequate.

Lives in Shanghai, has a degree in translation and works at the head office of a multinational clothing retailer. She writes ‘My message about China: I have to say, we are quite lucky generation to live in such a times. Coz society encourages those who contribute to the society and if you are brave enough to seize the chance, you’ll get what you want. China is developing at such a speed that it never has, so what we need to do is to do what we can and enjoy what we have. China , really amazing! And I Believe it’ll be more amazing in the future. 1.What is your earliest memory of books and reading? This question makes me think of my group of friends reading books and exchanging ideas together when I was in junior school. We were fascinated about the classical novels like WALL (Weicheng) by QianZhongshu, a famous and brilliant writer in China.We even read books in classes and talked about it on our way home or on our way to school. That’s really unfogettable.

Gabeba Baderoon and Susan KiguliLast year, Ugandan poet Susan Kiguli, joined the Love Africa Carnival with her Animal Portraits, the first poems of an anthology she is writing for children. When Animal Portrais was selected as one of the most loved Love Notes of its month, I sent Susan a copy of Gabeba Baderoon’s A Hundred Silences. After some problems with the posting of the book, it finally arrived in Uganda last week. I thought Susan’s response to Gabeba’s poems was just too lovely to keep locked away in my Google mail box, so I asked Susan if she would mind if I posted it here at BookSA and she said it would be fine.

Genesis of a picture Book:’Angelo at the Waterfront’ by Christopher Gregorowski and Tony Grogan (Note of Affection #15, Love Africa Carnival)

Angelo at the WaterfrontAngelo at the Waterfront is a gem of picture book, a Cape Town Christmas tale, told by Christopher Gregorowski and illustrated by Tony Grogan. Last Monday evening Exclusive Books in Constantia hosted a children’s reading party under the village Christmas tree and Christopher, author of such classics as Fly, Eagle, Fly!, enchanted the children with his story of how to get a star on the top of a very tall Christmas tree. Tony, the cartoonist who has been called ’something of a national institution’, patiently drew helicopters for the children and I was thrilled to get a signed original Tony Grogan helicopter. For Christmas, Love Note #15 is about the creation of what will surely become a South African picture book classic,Angelo at the Waterfront. (more…)

It’s about a girl who goes on holiday to her grandparents’ farm in De Rust, expecting the ordinary, but encountering a boy who turns out to be quite extraordinary. For Carnival note of affection #10, Sally has selected a lovely passage describing a farm in the Klein Karoo from this novel-in-progress. Author of critically acclaimed, page-turner The Goblet Club, Sally won the MER Youth Prize for best youth novel and the You/Huisgenoot I am a Writer Competition. Animal Portraits by Susan Kiguli (Note of Affection #4, Love Africa Carnival)

Susan N. Kiguli, a poet and lecturer at Makerere University in Uganda has been called ‘the leading intellectually astute voice in contemporary East African poetry’. Celebrated in East Africa, Kiguli’s work appears in many East African collections, including Luvai and Makokha’s Echoes across the Valley (2000), Benge and Bangirana’s Uganda Poetry Anthology (2000) and Eye of the Storm/L’oeil du cyclone (2002). Her first collection of poetry, The African Saga (1998) made literary history in Uganda by selling out in less than a year. Published by FEMRITE,Uganda Women Writer’s Association, the collection won the National Book Trust of Uganda poetry award in 1999 and was reprinted in 1999 and 2003.

It is an honour to include as Carnival Note of Affection#4, four poems from Animal Portraits, Susan Kiguli’s collection in progress of poems intended for 9-11 year olds.

Scheherazade the hero of the Arabian Nights
She swirls in details and jewel coloured patterns upon patterns laced in gold. Alf Layla wa Layla. The noble woman who told stories for dear life, she was my first and remains my greatest role model: Scheherazade. Her turquoise sky with white stars flies off the page at me. Officially there is no author of The Thousand Nights and One Nights, sometimes called the Arabian Nights, but I think the author is the spirit of the woman who first inspired the collection.     Mobile Literacy for Africa Manifesto – start the revolution today towards making Africa a superpower

    ‘I am prepared to make a mistake, I am prepared to say what I want to say, even if it is not perfect, has flaws, I want to communicate. An idea, a question, a communication held back out of fear of sounding foolish isn’t an idea, a question or a communication; it is nothing. An idea, a question, a communication expressed no matter how imperfectly, is better than nothing.’—as a teacher of second-language English in China, this is all I asked of my students: try, say something, anything is better than nothing, reach out and speak, language is a bridge. And I told them too, people are remarkably good at and willing to decipher even the most imperfect messages.

    So now I am prepared to make a mistake, to be imperfect, to risk sounding like a fool, drunk on green tea, as I make this brash manifesto: With our current mobile technology there is no longer an excuse or a reason for there to be illiteracy in Africa. There is no excuse or reason for children to grow up without stories to read in their home languages.

    With our current technology we do not have to wait for a large, creaky institution to mobilise, for a government to act, for any laborious union of governments to meet and talk and meet and talk and eat and meet and talk, we absolutely have the power as individuals to transform our continent. Skeptics may look at the news and laugh at the thought of Africa being a superpower (as they no doubt would have laughed during the famine in China if anyone suggested that country a few decades later would be so influential). Africa is a continent of talent, dynamic people and rich resources, at the rate other countries are destroying their environments, we will soon be the most precious continent on earth, provided we take care of what we have. The best way to secure and protect what we have, is to re-vision ourselves as magnificent, is to educate. With technology the children of Africa can make the world their world. In today’s computer/Internet age, reading and writing is key. To use technology the children of Africa must be literate and more, they must be avid readers and great writers, so they can communicate their hearts’ content with scintillating deftness.

    A wise publisher once said, ‘It is possible for a person to read themselves out of poverty.’ Likewise, I believe it is possible for Africa to read its way out of poverty.

    “I saw an excellent film on literacy produced by PRAESA called Bridges to Literacy – it was particularly aimed at creative strategies for finding text to incorporate into child’s play and learning for enhancing literacy in text-low rural environments. It was about finding fun ways to motivate reading. In the film was a parent reading shop signs and then a passport with a child. First I thought, that’s really brilliant idea, having grown up with books, I’ve never had to think of creative ways of finding text, it’s been all around, but yes, text is not only in books, it’s in passports too! Books are expensive and I understand it is hard to distribute them to every environment, but now I think, who could ever learn to love reading or to become an articulate writer by reading a passport? Only a rare soul, perhaps, everyone is special but few are rare, although all have tremendous potential given the right tools – children even in rural settings don’t need to read passports in this mobile age.”

    “The number of mobile phone users in Africa exceeded 280 million in the first quarter of this year and will reach the 300 million mark next month,” according to Wireless Intelligence.” With the population of Africa at around 900 million, that means one in three people use a mobile phone. (See too http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/article737130.ece) Not everyone using the phones is able to send or read text messages.

    In a report on poverty reduction and mobile technology, the importance of information was highlighted:

    “The lack of affordable access to relevant information and knowledge services among the rural poor has been a concern to development economists for some time. Traditionally, information is regarded by economists as a critical element in the efficient functioning of markets. For example, the first fundamental theorem of welfare economics (i.e., competitive equilibria are Pareto efficient) and the law of one price (i.e., the price of a good should not differ between any two markets by more than the transport cost between them) are based on the assumption that economic agents have the necessary information (Jensen 2007). Moreover, access to information is essential for the emergence of global information and knowledge based economy and has the ability to empower poor communities, enhance skills, and link various institutions involved in poverty reduction. Despite this being widely recognized, access to information has been limited in reality and very few empirical studies exist which assess the impact of investments aimed at providing access to information.”

    The same report notes the Low Barriers to Entry. Given the affordability and coverage of mobile telephony … “mobile has become the most easily accessible and ubiquitous communications device in rural areas. Easy availability of low priced new handsets with basic features and emergence of secondary markets for used devices, whose prices are even lower, make them within reach for even the poorest of the poor.”

    Mobile learning is a new field of research. There have been initiatives to educate see M-Learning and even a mobile learning inintiative in the South Africa in the health-care sector .

    In Japan mobile novels have been a hit.

    And Mobile novels have been empowering, particularly to women.

    In fact, although frowned-upon by the literary elite, mobile novels have proved empowering to writers in Japan. Today in Japan five out of the top ten best-selling books were WRITTEN on mobile phones.

    In South Africa flash fiction via mobile has recently been introduced by Michelle Matthews at Novel Idea.

    In the context of education and story-telling, Jill Attewell of the UK-based National Literacy Trust writes:

    We believe that the desire to communicate in text is a vital early step towards literacy and researchers have observed that young people who would not normally write messages are often enthusiastic texters (Plant, 2001).
    M-learning’s target audience is young adults who have not succeeded in traditional education, particularly those with literacy and numeracy problems. It is a research and development project which started in 2001 and runs to September 2004. Our work includes research focusing on technologies and interfaces, and users and uses of mobile phones, palmtops and computer games. The research is coupled with development of learning materials and experiences, accessed via mobile phones and palmtop computers, and supporting learning management and intelligent tutor systems.
    Very little of the existing research into mobile phone use includes any effects on literacy. Kasesniemi and Rautiainen made a detailed studied of SMS use by Finnish 13 to 18-year-olds. They reported that “Finnish teachers have been worried about the negative effects that the free-form, often quickly written text messages may have” particularly as “SMS communication does not rely on traditional grammar or punctuation required for texts written for school.” However, they observed positive benefits especially for boys who “have a tendency to resent official teaching of Finnish ” and because “the unique writing style provides opportunities for creativity.”
    Of course literacy is not just about spelling. Speaking, listening and discussion are essential to improving reading and writing skills. Therefore it is encouraging when a researcher writes that teenage girls interviewed reported noticing that their male counterparts “had become far more chatty and communicative since getting used to using mobile phones” (Plant, 2001).
    Stephen Heppell, director of Ultralab at Anglia Polytechnic University, emphasises the importance of the skill of oracy. He has observed that “the ability to storytell, to speak in public, to show and tell, has historically been valued as a mark of a literate citizen”. Nowadays the mobile phone offers young people unparalleled opportunities to speak in public and storytell.
    Some observers have expressed the concern that young people’s social and communication skills may be damaged by too much reliance on mobile phones. However Taylor and Harper (2002) found young people often sat together using their mobile phones and engaged in gift-giving rituals by exchanging content or phones. Similarly, trials of our early prototype learning materials found that the learners were very keen to communicate with each other and to learn collaboratively. In our next phase of learner research, in addition to trying out new materials and systems, we will be exploring a variety of pedagogic approaches to mobile learning.     I thought about the film with the child reading the passport. I thought about the mobile learning conference. Several thoughts collided:
    1. We do not have enough books in Africa.
    2. We do not have enough books particularly for children in their home languages during the formative reading ages of 5-7, but for all ages.
    3. There are some wonderful initiatives like Little Hands, aimed at creating beautiful multilingual books for children across Africa.
    4. Books are expensive to produce and distribute. That is not to say they aren’t glorious and that every effort to get books to children must still be made. Yet the reality is with all the best will in the world, the cost, the problems of getting donors and the slowness of distribution means that for every night from tonight, there will still be millions of bright children who don’t have rich textual role-models from which to learn and be inspired in their own language.
    5. The barriers to entry for mobile phones are lower than for multilingual books.
    6. The mobile phones are out there waiting to be used. (Like blank books waiting for us to fill with stories!)
    7. Multilingual stories can be messaged across Africa at a fraction of the cost of producing books.
    8. Depending on phone capabilities, even picture stories can be sent out for children.
    9. There must be a way of devising and delivering mobile literacy lessons to Africa.
    10. The children are waiting…

    There are two potential projects here:
    A) Mobile multi-language stories
    B) Mobile literacy lessons

    PROJECT A – MOBILE MULTI-LANGUAGE STORIES
    To get this going quickly this is what is needed:
    1. A stock of short stories – since Aesop has stood the test of time and continents and is the original master of flash fiction, I propose a pepped-up, 21st century, Africa-relevant (although not Africa-centric) revision of the fables. [Also, Aesop is of interest to Adults and children]
    2. Authors of Africa to do the pepping-up. The best way for this to work is for writers to volunteer a fable (there are dozens all in translation at Project Gutenberg under Aesop’s Fables) and then to post it here, stating the language of the post if it is other than English. The only style request for the fables is: KEEP IT BRIEF.
    3. Translators – pick a fable, translate and post it, stating the language and the regions it is spoken. This first wave of stories is not about being perfect, it’s about communicating. All efforts with good intentions are welcome.
    4. Editors – those who see the posted stories and translations, check for accuracy and integrity of content and translation. After you’ve read a translation, post a message confirming it is fine for sending out.
    5. Messaging Aesop’s Fables across Africa. There are two options chain messaging and free broadcast messaging.
    6. Chain messaging can begin as soon as there is a story in translation. We can pass the stories on ourselves, like gifts, with a message at the end of the story to pass on to other friends. If you see a Fable posted here and want to pass it on to a friend anywhere in Africa who may like to translate it or send a translation on to others who speak the same language – pass it on (if you are a corporate with an sms mailing list, maybe consider sending out the story to your customers to pass on…) Especially send the stories to friends in rural communities. Chain messaging has an element of organic growth, and free market democracy about it – if people like this idea and the story, it will spread, and if they don’t it won’t … there’s no reason to wait. If even one child gets a funky fable to read in his/her home language tonight that would be great. It’s up to the individuals who read this to make it happen.
    7. For broadcast messaging mobile phone networks need to be involved – this is more complex, though not impossible. A volunteer with contacts or the ability to negotiate with the networks is required for this.
    8. Here’s a fable

    FUNKY FABLE #1
    The Truck Driver and His Dog

    A Truck Driver about to set out on a journey saw his Dog standing at the door stretching. He asked the Dog: “Why do you stand there yawing? Everything is ready but you. Come on let’s go.” The Dog, wagging his tail, replied: “What! I’ve been ready for a long time; it’s you I’m waiting for.”
    A loiterer often blames delay on his more active friend.

    (Anyone willing to volunteer to translate it into some other languages of Africa?)

    PROJECT B – MOBILE LITERACY LESSONS
    1. This requires research and experts to develop suitable lessons. Even one little lesson is better than nothing as a start. Volunteer researchers and experts are required.
    2. There is a university in South Africa researching mobile education. Interested research volunteers are welcome to email me for more information on this and a contact.
    3. There is a World Conference on Mobile Learning in October – for more information see MLearn http://www.mlearn2008.org/ — volunteers to go (at their expense) and come back and share the information are required.
    4.. Messaging mobile literacy. Again this can be done as a chain message or a broadcast.
    5. Ideas and initiatives – volunteers with ideas are needed.
    6. Investigation of picture messaging.

    It will not surprise me if some of what I’ve said is impractical and can be better put or achieved, but I didn’t want to delay, and so I’ve said it as best I can. That’s all I wanted to do, to communicate (regardless of mistakes) my heart’s desire, which is that there should be no children without access to stories written in their home languages in a mobile age in Africa and that as individuals we should realize how uniquely empowered we now are: with technology we have more power to communicate, to create change, quickly and effectively than ever before.

    Volunteer translators needed in 28 languages

    Orphan’s Lullaby is more than a children’s book, it’s a language act of African unity.

    May 2007:

    The General Assembly this afternoon, recognizing that genuine multilingualism promotes unity in diversity and international understanding, proclaimed 2008 the International Year of Languages. Acting without a vote, the Assembly, also recognizing that the United Nations pursues multilingualism as a means of promoting, protecting and preserving diversity of languages and cultures globally, emphasized the paramount importance of the equality of the Organization’s six official languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish).

    Originally I wrote a song with 21 lines called Orphan’s Lullaby, with the intention of turning it into a picture book and selling it to raise money for AIDS Orphans. So I began work on the pictures. My plan was to have each page with one line from the lullaby faced with a magnificent picture to inspire any child’s imagination; that would make 21 pictures and 21 text pages.

    After the recent wave of Xenophobia, I thought since there is only one line of text per facing page, wouldn’t it be a wonderful statement of all-inclusiveness to have one book embracing fifty languages spoken in Africa — all the official languages as well as a representative selection of ‘un-official’ languages. Now each picture will be faced with fifty lines each a different colour and a different language.

    My hope is that it could be sold everywhere as a celebration of Africa and that all the profits will go to orphans and also to help refugees and migrant workers in need.
